Salience is “the quality of being particularly noticeable or important; prominence” (OED). It is interesting to realize that we filter out a lot of reality. Many things go unnoticed because it doesn’t register as “important.”
In a survival situation you notice things that keep you from being killed. But you have limited brain power, so what is not salient to survival gets ignored.
Here is the problem, noticing the things that help you survive are not the same things you need to notice to thrive.
We have to remap our salience landscape if we are to learn to flourish in the modern world. How? By retraining our mind through meditation.
